We are making some availability changes to our flytrap inventory this winter due to low stock, seasonal dormancy, and decreased wintertime demand. We will continue to display any items we have in stock, regardless of their availability status, for our customers to browse. We will remove items from visibility that we do not have to make your search easier. If you see any item you are interested in, please inquire about it, as we may be able to accommodate select requests.

Let's Define "Size" for our Plants in the Store:

Only the sizes that are currently in stock are listed as options when ordering a plant. For example, the "adult" size may not often be listed, and sometimes "young adult" or "beginner size" may be the only size offered at the time.

Plant Sizes:

Sea Island SnapTraps is a great website for buying quality venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants. They offer plants in many different sizes, from beginner plants to adult plants. Each size range description gives a general idea of the maturity and growth stage of the plant, but this sizing information is not a precise description of the plants you will receive.

The sizing is based on several characteristics, including age, maturity, growth rate, root development, and rhizome size. The relative size of a particular cultivar is also considered, as it relates to other similar plants of its type. For example, a "Kim Jong Il" Venus Flytrap will be smaller than even an immature "Typical" Venus Flytrap, because it is a small plant regardless of its age or maturity.

Venus Flytraps
  • A beginner plant is a small or juvenile plant that is at least a year or two away from flowering. It is well "hardened" (as applicable) and acclimated, with healthy root and leaf growth.

  • A young adult plant is almost ready to flower. It is not a baby or a juvenile but is well on its way to adulthood. It is "hardened," acclimated, and has healthy root and leaf growth.

  • An adult plants are mature or nearly mature, very well established, healthy, and robust plants that are ready to flower. Their root systems and rhizome bulb are very well developed and will grow vigorously, relative to the cultivar.

  • NOTE: If the plants you order are dormant, their leaves may appear smaller than expected. However, their root systems and rhizome bulbs are very well developed.
